PROSPECTING ON
THE PORCUPINE
Duffy’s Roadhouse and Porcupine Creek are: 266 miles from Anchorage; 267 miles from Fairbanks; 82 miles from Glennallen; 63 miles from Tok; and, 4 miles from Slana Post Office. Slana and the Slana River have been an established name for this area since the days of Russian occupation. A telegraph station called Slana Station was established in 1903. In 1917 a Trading Post and roadhouse were established and in 1935 the Nabesna Road came through from the Richardson Highway. A new Trading Post was built on the new road which opened up the Nabesna Mine. The mine was closed during the 2nd World War because of government regulations and the death of the owner around the same time. Don Duffy leased the Slana Roadhouse in 1947 and during that year travel was permitted over the Alaska Highway without special permit. The new Black Top Highway was surveyed in 1950 which bypassed the old roadhouse. At that time Duffy filed on the present ground and began construction of the establishment. In 1972 new owners obtained the Roadhouse from Don and Zaz Duffy.
Mac and Monica, purchased the roadhouse in 2007 with the intention of starting Duffy’s Adventures. The Slana Roadhouse, has been an established business longer than any other Roadhouse between the Yukon Boundary in Canada and Anchorage but it was closed for several years. The plans are to again offer visitors from the lower 48, Canada, and all foreign countries a friendly atmosphere, services and A LOT MORE than has ever been offered.
GOLD! In the late 1890’s and early 1900’s Gold was discovered in the Slate Creek area and some of the richest deposits came from the Miller’s Gulch and Slate Creek claims. In 1922 President Warren G Harding and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge signed Patents to D. Roger Englar for mining claims along Slate Creek and other mining in the area included the Nabesna Mine and several small scale mining operations draining into the Porcupine Creek as well as Ahtell Creek.

The roadhouse, now owned by Mac and Monica is only a “stones throw” from Porcupine Creek and they would walk it and other creeks in the area with a shovel, bucket and gold pan and test for gold whenever they had time. They were getting gold near the surface so they staked or had others stake all of the available mining claims for several miles of the creeks and mountains with the intentions of mining and starting Porcupine Creek Gold Mining Adventures.
Miners, prospectors and anyone who wants to mine for gold on our Porcupine Creek and take photos of Ahtell Creek, Kennedy Lake and enjoy an Alaskan Adventure may do so for One Day or All Summer. You may hike the 5 miles, bring your own 4x4 ATV or we will take you and equipment back to the claims or rent one of our 4x4’s. Options: see, (F) Helpers or companions; (G) Transport to the claim and pick up for return to Duffy’s at a predetermined schedule; (H) ATV and/or Trailer Rental; and (I) Equipment Rental – all prices are per day for one item. If you break the item or lose it you will be responsible for the repair or replacement costs. If the ATV stops working you may need to send a message by someone in the area requesting a tow or in some cases you may need to walk out and return with an associate to assist in recovery of the ATV. At times Cell Phones may work at the claims
F. Helpers for any mining activity: $50 per day for each individual helping you or accompanying you, in any capacity, on our claims (a fee will apply for any transport and for special needs).
G. Transport: If you need transport to the claim please keep in mind that Transport depends on equipment needed, number of associates required, type and size of ATV, need for ATV trailers, number of trips required, and more (all prices are per individual and for each trip or piece of equipment for one day). An appropriate fee will be accessed for special transport – if available.
a) $80 individual transport to and return from the claim: (individual may be doubled up on an ATV with the associate or transported in a trailer at our option) – (you may add a trailer see b)
b) $40 transporting equipment in one trailer (does not include an ATV – see “a” above) and return to Duffy’s with the equipment at the end of the day (you will need to assist the associate with loading and unloading the equipment)
c) $135 One associate, ATV & trailer to haul equipment that will not fit in the first trailer & return at end of day (you will need to assist the associate with loading and unloading the equipment)
H. ATV and Trailer Rental: no one under 18 may operate ATV’s. All ATV’s and Trailers are for one day and returned to Duffy’ at a predetermined schedule; If returned more than one hour late you will be charged for 1/2 of a day or for a full day if 4 hours or more late. If you lose or break the item you will be charged for the repairs or replacement cost
a) $155 for one ATV (4x4 or 6x6 at our option) includes a full tank of fuel
b) $40 for one AVT Trailer (single or double axel at our option)
I. Equipment Rental: no one under 18 may operate equipment but may be a helper for their parent or guardian who is over 18 years old. All prices are per item (see a – b – c – etc.) per day which must be returned by a predetermined time schedule and if they are returned more than one hour late you will be charged for 1/2 of a day or for a full day if 4 hours or more late. If you break or lose the item you will be charged for the repairs or replacement cost

c) $65 Metal Detector
d) $140 High Banker or Dredge – 2 1/2 inch including fuel

Prospecting is available from 8AM until 8PM daily; unless other arrangements have been made.
If it is your first time participated in Gold Mining with us at Duffy’s Adventures and Roadhouse you will need to attend a fifteen minute orientation explaining the use of equipment, your responsibilities and liabilities and our expectations regarding your conduct as well as our responsibilities and conduct to you
Prices and availability are subject to rescheduling, change or cancellation without notice due to circumstances beyond our control
If we must reschedule, change or cancel Your Adventure we will try to let you know in advance and we will give you options to reschedule or issue a full refund, however, if you have used any portion of your Adventure the only option will be rescheduling your Adventure or charge for the time used and refund the balance
Be certain to schedule Your Duffy’s Adventure well in advance which will allow us to make certain any item you need is available on the date scheduled
